Postnatal depression is different. It tends to develop within the first few weeks after birth but can emerge several months later, and it does not resolve without support.

What Postnatal Depression Can Look Like

Postpartum depression does not always present as sadness. For some people it shows up as persistent irritability, a sense of numbness, or feeling completely detached from their baby. Others experience intense anxiety, intrusive thoughts, difficulty sleeping even when the baby sleeps, or a deep sense of guilt and shame around not feeling how they expected to feel.

These experiences can be frightening, particularly when they conflict with the image of parenthood that is so often portrayed as instinctively joyful. It is important to understand that postnatal depression is not a reflection of your love for your child, your capability as a parent, or your character.
