What to Expect from Your First Therapy Session

Starting therapy for the first time can feel like a big step. It is natural to feel a mix of nerves and uncertainty, particularly if you are unsure what the process involves or how talking to a stranger might help. Understanding what typically happens in a first session can make that step feel a little less daunting.

A Space to Be Heard

Your first therapy session is not about having all the answers or knowing exactly what to say. It is an opportunity for you and your therapist to begin building a working relationship. Your psychologist will take time to understand what has brought you to therapy, what you are finding difficult, and what you are hoping to get from the process. There is no pressure to share more than you feel comfortable with at this stage.

What Your Therapist Will Explore

During an initial consultation, your therapist will ask questions to gain a broader picture of your life, your history, and the challenges you are currently facing. This helps them to understand how your difficulties may have developed and what factors could be maintaining them. It is also a chance for you to ask questions and get a feel for whether the approach feels right for you.

Building a Plan Together

Psychological therapy works best when it is tailored to the individual. Following your first session, your therapist will work collaboratively with you to identify the most appropriate evidence-based approach for your needs, whether that is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), or another modality. Together, we will help you to set meaningful goals and agree on a plan to move forward.
