Is Low Self-Confidence Holding You Back?
Most people would not describe themselves as lacking confidence. They would use other words: realistic, practical, or just not someone who likes the spotlight.
But beneath those labels, there is often something quieter and more persistent. A sense that other people are more capable, more deserving, more worthy of the things you want. A voice that is never quite satisfied, no matter what you do or how hard you try.
And no matter what you achieve, it never quite seems to shift.
What It Can Feel Like
You might be asking yourself:
Why do I always assume I am going to fail?
Why do I find it so hard to accept a compliment?
Why do I compare myself to everyone around me?
Why do I say yes when I want to say no?
Why do I feel like a fraud, even when things are going well?
Why does criticism stay with me for days when praise fades instantly?
Why do I avoid opportunities because I am scared of getting it wrong?
Why do I feel invisible in a room full of people?
Why do I always put everyone else first?
Will I ever feel comfortable in my own skin?
If these questions resonate, you are not alone.
What Low Self-Confidence Really Is
Low self-confidence is not a personality trait. It is not simply shyness, and it is not something you are born with and stuck with forever.
It is usually something that develops over time, shaped by experiences, relationships, and the messages we receive about our own worth, often from a very early age.
It can show up as people-pleasing, perfectionism, difficulty making decisions, or a constant need for reassurance. It can hold you back in your career, affect your relationships, and quietly shrink the life you are willing to let yourself live.
Why Telling Yourself to Be More Confident Does Not Work
Low self-confidence is rarely shifted by positive thinking alone. When the belief that you are not enough is deeply ingrained, trying to think your way out of it tends not to reach far enough.
What helps is understanding where those beliefs came from, how they have been reinforced over time, and what it would take to genuinely begin to see yourself differently. That is work that is difficult to do alone, and it is exactly what counselling is designed to support.
